The Beginning

The Business Was Supposed to Give You Freedom.

In August 1997, at 29 years old, Todd packed up his family and moved 850 miles to Arizona. He’d just signed a 5-store area development agreement for a then-unknown smoothie concept called Jamba Juice. No local network. No safety net. A wife, three kids under six — including a 3-month-old daughter — and a dream.

Grand opening day came. Nobody showed up.

For the next 18 months, he pumped money in every month just to make payroll. Vendors put him on cash on delivery. He left before his kids woke up and got home after they were asleep. Every morning he woke up with a pit in his stomach.

Then the moment came. His financial partner Dave had already invested $700,000 — close to $1.3 million in today’s dollars. And Todd had to ask him for more.

Dave said yes.

Todd tripled down. Changed how he operated.

Turned the whole thing around.

But here’s what matters most: the freedom didn’t come at the end. Todd was at every school event, every game, every activity — even in the middle of the grind. He figured it out early, and he built a business that worked around his life, not one his life worked around.

Those five Jamba Juice locations eventually ranked in the top 10 of 450+ stores nationwide — growing at double the national average, year after year. He sold for a multi-million dollar exit.

After the sale, Todd bought a second franchise. A well-known local brand that had been operating in the same community for over a decade. Completely stalled out. Checked-out ownership. A manager doing just enough to keep the lights on.

He didn’t overhaul the menu. Didn’t redesign the store. He focused entirely on the fundamentals that had drifted — greetings, speed, cleanliness, team accountability, and consistent marketing.
